Semiotics The study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.
1) iconic signs- which actually look like what they represent.
2) symbolic/ arbitrary signs which have a meaning that must be culturally learned because they dont actuallt look liike what they represent.
3)indexical signs which have a connection to what they represent and are suggestion rather then directly resembling what they represent.
motivated signs- some signs can be more motivated that others.
for example a picture of david beckham is much more motivated than an unknown artists art work. This tells us that a more motivated sign jus has a mre limited range of possible interpretations because its more likely to be known for what it is exactly.
